Why the enclosure stays sealed

Field note

Why the enclosure stays sealed

Safety · For host utilities and inspectors

A Thornhill sealed unit is not a junction box. It is not a good place to store extra wire nuts. It is not a puzzle.

Host utilities sometimes ask for the policy in writing before a crew is allowed on a pole. This is that writing.

  1. Identify the unit from the exterior label only.
  2. If the gasket, housing, or bond looks wrong, stop and call Indianapolis.
  3. Do not remove the cover to confirm a theory.
  4. Replacement units arrive sealed. Old units leave sealed.

We have had one documented case of a technician opening a unit against instruction. He was not on the next day’s roster. We do not consider that anecdote entertainment. We consider it the reason this page exists.
